In order to begin the registration process you need your child’s Personal Education Number (PEN).

To access your child’s PEN please use the online PEN Request Form to receive the PEN via email. (Opens in a new window)

If you have not registered your child at their regular English Program Catchment School, you must complete 2 steps prior to applying for a Kindergarten Choice Program Placement

1. Complete the online application to enroll
2. Bring all supporting documentation to your English catchment school

Q:	I understand I need a Personal Education Number (PEN) in order to apply for Choice Program(s). How do I get my child’s PEN?
 A: After you’ve registered at your neighbourhood English catchment school, there are three ways to access your child’s PEN:
 <ul>
 <li>retrieve your child(ren)s PEN during the online application process by using the online PEN request form</li>
 <li>contact your English Catchment school and request your child’s PEN</li>
 <li>contact the K choice application helpline Tel (604) 713 -5688 during normal business hours or e-mail vsbkchoiceapply@vsb.bc.ca</li>
 </ul>
 Q:	How many Choice Programs can I apply for?
 A:	You may apply for up to three choice programs

Q:	Is the selection process on a first come first served basis, or is a draw system used?
 A:	A priority draw system is used for all choice programs
 
 Q:	Will parents be contacted if their child is not accepted into a choice program? Or are only accepted children contacted by the school?
 A:	All parents will be sent an e-mail regarding the status of their first program choice. This e-mail will either be an offer of a placement or indicate position on program waitlist.

Q:	When will parents be notified of the results?
 A:	Parents will be notified by the end of February.

Q:	If my child(ren) has been offered a placement into a Choice program, how long do I have to respond to the offer?
 A:	Parents are given two days to respond to the offer.

Q:	When does the Kindergarten Choice Program Application process end?
 A:	The application process closes on , 4:00PM February 3rd at 2026.

Q:	What types of Choice Programs are available for my child?
 A:	Some of the other programs of choice we provide include French Immersion, Early Mandarin Bilingual, Indigenous Focus, Montessori, or Fine Arts. You can explore all of these choice programs on our <a href="https://www.vsb.bc.ca/page/26694/elementary-programs" target="_blank">website</a>.

Q:	We live outside of the Vancouver school district. We have an older child already attending the choice program we are applying for. Does our younger child have sibling priority?
 A:	If you are out of district, you will not receive priority placement for siblings.

Instructions

Enter the nine digit Personal Education Number (PEN) and Birthdate of your child who is registered to attend Kindergarten in September 2026 .
A separate application must be made for each child.
If you are applying for more than one family member (i.e. twin or same age sibling), please have their PENs available.
If you are applying for a program where a sibling will be continuing in that program, please have their PENs available.
You can apply to up to 3 District Choice Programs, in any combination of program and school.
If there are more applicants than spaces for a District Choice Program, an electronic draw is held.
Choices 1, 2 and 3 are weighted in an electronic draw.
For each District Choice Program, Choice 1 applications will be drawn above Choice 2 applications, and Choice 2 applications above Choice 3 applications.

If you have registered your child at their catchment school and do not have a PEN number, use the online PEN Request Form to receive the PEN via email.
If you are unable to proceed using the PEN number that has been sent to you call (604) 713 -5688 – we will be available to help you between 9am and 3:30pm Monday to Friday, or contact VSBKChoiceApply@vsb.bc.ca .

Unable to Retrieve Your Child's PEN?

If you have registered your child recently at your English Catchment school your child’s PEN may not be available for 3 days. We request that you wait 3 days and try again at that time to access your child’s PEN to initiate the application process. If you are still unsuccessful in retrieving your child’s PEN at that time contact the PEN Service Line (604) 713 -5688 or e-mail VSBKChoiceApply@vsb.bc.ca.

All District Choice Program placement offers are based on availability of space and facilities.

For programs where there are fewer spaces than the number of applicants, the district will conduct an electronic draw. Spaces will be offered according to the priorities listed below.

Please note: The anticipated number of siblings is based upon information provided by families to schools. These numbers are subject to change. The number of estimated Kindergarten classes is based on school enrolment and the anticipated Kindergarten registrants for 2026-2027. The District continues to monitor school enrolment.

Students in the District with an older sibling who will be attending same District Choice Program during the same year at the same location.
Students whose residence is within the Vancouver School District.(City of Vancouver)
Students whose residence is outside the Vancouver School District. (Not in the City of Vancouver)
